Plan, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1572, 1905
... to Treed Cottage in Australian newspapers is to the death of Walter... to Treed Cottage in Australian newspapers is to the death of Walter ...The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). Plan No. 1572 represents the built environment bordered by Barkers Road, Wrixon Street, Edgevale Road and Fitzwilliam Street. Other streets identified on the plan include Stansell Street. Plan 1572 shows that by 1903-05, there was only patchy development in this area of Kew, mainly on Edgevale Road and Fitzwilliam Street. Only two named houses are identified: the quaintly named ‘Tweed Cottage’, and ‘Mendip’. The earliest reference to Treed Cottage in Australian newspapers is to the death of Walter Thompson, aged 74 who was a resident there in 1885. His youngest daughter was to die there in 1908. Mendip to the north of Tweed Cottage was owned by Henry Thompson; he was to die in 1901; his wife in 1932. At this period of time, Malin Street and Clivedon Court did not extend to Barkers Road.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1572, cartography -

Book, McKenzie Day Book, Early 1900s
... Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams..., Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee ...This is a 1918 Day Book listing some employees/contractors and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by them. There is a separate page for each employee. The book lists such tasks as ‘carting from the Quarry’, ‘tarring Raglan Parade’, ‘tarring at the Gardens’, ‘screening Liebig Street’, ‘working at the Ladies’ Baths’ and ‘general patching’. The names of the employees/contractors include Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee. The name ‘McKenzie’ on the first page is the only clue to the identity of the employer/overseer and so far his identity has not been established. The jobs listed suggest that he was either an employee of the Warrnambool Council in the Public Works area or a contractor hired to do the same sort of work. This note book is of great interest as it lists workers and the jobs covered by them in 1918 in Warrnambool and it will be of greater significance when the identity of McKenzie is established. This is a note book with ruled blue and red lines. The cover is black and is a little torn and scuffed. There are some loose pages. The entries in the book are handwritten, mostly in black ink. ‘McKenzie Day Book November 4th 1918’history of warrnambool, mckenzie contractor, mckenzie warrnambool -

Stubley's Furniture Store late 1950s. The Stubley Group began in 1946 when Purcell Stubley purchased a site with petrol bowsers in Main Street from 'Snowy' Jessop. In 1948 Purcell began building the new Stubley Motors, working round the old site to keep the business operating. It was completed in 1951. The Group expanded into other areas such as this Furniture store. [Syd Thompson Fruit Shop was here in early 1950s, Syd lived in the house at back. He coached Boxing]. This became the Welkay Store in the 1960's and owned by Walter Kenyon. The Welkay store moved opposite to 100 Main Road on 6/9/1966, ref: Diamond Valley News Page 9. A report on the history of the Yarra Track by John Waghorn, a local amateur historian.A report on the history of the Yarra Track by John Waghorn, a local amateur historian. John Waghorn was an amateur historian, an authority on the history of Victoria's postal services. He could tell you how mail was delivered in the high country in the 1880s, where the town of Gobur was, or when the overland Melbourne-Sydney mail service began. He admitted that his hobby has got a little out of hand. He had 30 filing cabinets, and indexes of more than 70,000 postal workers over the past 160 years crammed into three rooms at his home. If an ancestor was a postmaster in a Victorian town, he may have been able to reveal the person's occupation, income and working conditions.yarra track, john waghorn, victoria's postal services, wood's point, sydney road, longwood, merton, mansfield, postmasters, bonnie doon, melville merton mansfield, eltham, healesville, marysville, walhalla, melbourne-warburton-wood's point line, loose bags, heidelberg post office, eltham post office, kangaroo ground post office, yarra glen post office, marysville post office, healesville post office, mansfield post office, jamieson post office, gaffney's creek post office, wood's point post office, postal department, george rieck, stockman, jones, beecher, stockman's reward, big river, mary mcdonald, upper yarra river, donovan's creek, cornelius donovan, bridget buggy, matlock, alexandra, william farrell, jordan diggings, new chum, watts river, black spur, narbethong, granton, acheron river, mount strickland, paradise plains, mount grant, mount arnold, jordan goldfields, william robley, robley's spur, big river crossing, great dividing range, cumberland valley, james mcguigan, w elliot, christopher harrison, james marsh, cobb and co, box hill, lilydale, fehrings, koehlers, shaws, bear creek, cairnsville, cumberland creek, walkers, golden bower mine, collins' mountain home hotel, walsh's creek post office, rosa mcveigh, frank barton, hitchins, matthew kennedy, william morris, e r nichols, t woods, tom burchell, peter kerr, henry kuyper, william podlech, george koehler, henry brockmann, henry petty, thomas smith, jacob butchart, john perry, slingsby davis, royal mail hotel, walter gray, john summers, travellers rest hotel, lockington, the oaks, the springs, st clair, thomas crawford, springvale hotel, john sinclair, saint clair hotel, gould, mathews, willie we have missed you hotel, germany, johan fehring, adelaide, linton, ballarat, gunbower, murray river, anna katerina fehring, 1890s depression, land boom, fehring place, fred baker, alf sparke, fehring's hotel, mcveigh's hotel, wood's point mountaineer, l cox, victorian country directories, letson cox, coburg, maria hayes, setson, fitzroy, richmond, john cox, jordan river, jericho, e. norris, le poidevin, newell, o'brien, alhambra, sinclair, parker, ellis, tripp, quin, vernon, thompson, charsley, james fahie, george locke, william chester, chesterville, kirwan, cumberland reserve, blue spruce, e.s. and a bank, selby joyce, selby charles joy, selby joseph joyce -

The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. Dederang won its first flag in the Tallangata League in1958 led by the Hobbs brothers Rex, Colin, Ken and Jack2 original black and white photographs of Dederang football club teams.
